Pilates: The Five Minute Scoop
Pilates is an exercise method created by
Joseph H. Pilates (pronounced pul-LAH-teez) designed to effectively
strengthen your core muscles and develop body alignment. Popular with
dancers for decades, Pilates is now taught in health clubs, physical therapy
centers, and private Pilates studios to a much wider audience.
In general, Pilates is best learned under the
guidance of an experienced instructor who can give you feedback on your form
and positioning. That said, books, videos, and home equipment can be a good
supplement for those who already have some experience in Pilates. A book or
video can also serve as a solid introduction for someone who is considering
Pilates, but hasn't decided whether or not to commit to a series of classes
yet.
