Looking to Get into Shape?
It's your call!

by Kevin Valluzzi

Imagine if losing weight and getting into the best shape of your life were as easy as making a 20-minute phone call? Using a new fitness coaching program called Fitness By Phone®, it just could be this easy. Fitness by Phone® (FBP) is a highly effective concept in the fitness industry that many people have never heard of. It empowers clients to take full responsibility for their results without depending on a particular person, place, or time for exercise while still providing access to expert direction every day of the week. The success of FBP is largely due to its professional coaches and the individualized monitoring system they incorporate into each clients program.

Fitness Monitoring with Personalized Feedback

Each client receives a heart rate monitor and an accelerometer (calorie counter). FBP coaches call these Motivational Activity Monitors and they allow constant feedback to the client ensuring that the exercise regiment is being done effectively. Clients also receive a specially designed FBP diary so they can record the numbers from the monitors. This diary is faxed weekly to your Master FBP coach to review, evaluate, and comment on.

The beauty of this type of program is that you don’t have to stress over what exercises to do or at what intensity. That’s where the 20 minute phone call comes into play. Each week, you talk to your Master FBP coach and go over the prior week’s workouts (how you did, how hard or easy were the workouts, did you reach your goals, etc.) and you also set your goals for the upcoming week. Your Master FBP coach will tell you exactly how to fill out the diary with your new goals. All you have to do is just follow what the diary says. That’s what makes this whole program so successful. There is no guessing at what to do, how fast to do it, or how long to do it for, etc. You also don’t have to worry about ever reaching a plateau like many people do on traditional fitness programs because each week the client progresses to new levels of fitness and calorie burn.

Not only do you get to talk to a certified personal trainer for 20 minutes about your program once a week, but you also get unlimited access to your coach 7 days a week by phone, fax, or email. If you have any questions about your program, feel free to fire away with your questions or comments.

Success Through Accountability

The whole idea of success through accountability is not groundbreaking news. It has already been proven in most behavior modification programs. There is something about holding yourself accountable to someone other than yourself that increases the percentage of success.

A study conducted at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute demonstrated that only two percent of study participants completed a 24 week walking program on their own, as opposed to over 50 percent of participants who received a phone call once a week to check on their progress.

To add to that, additional research shows that 90 percent of FBP clients still exercise anywhere from four to seven days a week after their initial 24 week FBP program has ended.

Phone coaching is ideal for just about anyone, especially:

  • busy professionals

  • busy parents

  • people who travel

  • beginner exercisers

Most people’s lives are just too busy to meet with a trainer on a specific day at a specific time.  Work, kids, and family obligations are all things that we deal with day in and day out. Now, there are people who do have personal trainers and are very successful with them.  What happens a lot, though, is a person works with a trainer two times a week and then does absolutely nothing as far as exercise the other five days.

Phone coaching gets you motivated to not only work out on your own, but to do it four to five times a week. There is no greater motivator than reaching your goals on your fitness diary each week.  And if you’re reaching those goals, you can bet that you’re reaching your goals of weight loss, muscle tone, etc. They go hand in hand.

Why Phone Coaching Works

The success of phone coaching can be attributed to five main factors:

  • Flexibility and Convenience: Clients can call from wherever they are for their weekly phone appointment and they can exercise wherever and whenever it fits into their day and week.

  • Goal Setting: Goals are set around the equipment clients have available to them, what they enjoy, and customized to their health and exercise needs.

  • Support: Clients enjoy the support, encouragement, and teaching of a professional coach who designs very specific personal exercise goals to maximize results and minimize the time spent achieving them.

  • Motivation: Motivational activity monitors provide immediate, objective feedback to tell them whether they are on track, or not, in the amount of activity, and the appropriate intensity level.

  • Accountability: The weekly phone call holds clients accountable to someone other than themselves, so they are more likely to do the exercise they are committed to do.

So remember, the only thing stopping you from getting into the best shape of your life could very well be a 20-minute phone call.
