Exploring ancient wonders by foot
by
David Stanley
Ask me which Pacific island has the most to
offer hikers and I'll probably answer Easter Island. Here on an island 11 km
wide and 23 km long you'll find nearly a thousand ancient Polynesian statues
strewn along a powerfully beautiful coastline or littering the slopes of an
extinct volcano.
Outdoor Adventures in
Boulder
Be an uberjock in the Colorado Rockies
by Zoie Clift
Boulder might be a small city, but it’s loaded with
huge outdoor adventure opportunities. The city is home to a little
under 100,000 residents but in the area’s 27 square mile borders
are over 200 miles of hiking trails as well as 41,000 acres of
open space. The city lies at the foot of the Rock Mountains and
has an extensive park system not only within its boundaries but is
also surrounded by national and state parks. The city also
receives about 300 days of sunshine a year, providing ample
conditions to enjoy these surroundings. With credentials like
these, it’s easy to see why this city was recently named the “
Best Place to be an Uberjock” by Outside Magazine.

walking tour options for every taste
by
Patrice-Anne Rutledge
The best way to really
get to know any city is to walk its main thoroughfares, ramble down its side
alleys, and immerse yourself in the day-to-day activities taking place on
the streets its locals frequent. San Francisco is no exception. Plus, as an
added bonus, the city’s numerous hills will make you more fit in the
process.
Discover
the Llyn Peninsula
Take a step back in time in the Welsh countryside
by Paula Bardell
Stretching from the peak of Snowdon to Bardsey
Island (or Ynys Enlli, the Island of the Tides), the Llyn Peninsula is a
unique and beautiful part of North Wales, renown for its natural charm and
mild climate. So spectacular is its coastline that many
thousands of acres have been protected by the National Trust, and vast
tracts of land have been designated Areas of Special Scientific Interest. It
is a haven for wild flowers and its indigenous wildlife attracts naturalists
from far and wide—it even boasts its very own breed of sheep (Llyn Sheep).
Trekking in Vietnam
Adventures in the village of Sapa
by Zoie Clift
The village of Sapa lies in the Northwest
section of Vietnam on the Hoang Lien Son mountain range. Only miles from the
Chinese border, the area allows visitors a chance to catch the misty
panoramic views infamous to a region that only recently opened again to
tourism. A border skirmish with China closed off the village in 1979 and it
would be another fourteen years before travel to the region was given the
green light to resume. Now, the area is considered a mecca for backpackers
and hikers due to its supreme trekking terrain.

Basics on St. John
Ecotourism on Maho Bay
by
Jacquelin Cangro
A new advertisement on the subway luring
frigid New Yorkers to the US Virgin Islands reads, “Hang up your coat.
Forget your gloves. Here, ice is for your drink.” The accompanying photos
reveal everything that makes the Caribbean a winter paradise—an ocean as
clear as drinking water, secluded beaches free of litter, a mountainous
umbrella of green foliage. One photo shows a sweeping aerial shot of Maho
Bay on the pristine island of St. John, the smallest of the three US Virgin
Islands.

Ecotourists discover there's more to Panama than the canal
by Audrey Knight
Can you keep a secret? One of the
best-kept secrets in the world of travel is ... Panama.
What does Panama have besides the canal, those funny hats, and the legacy of
United States intervention? To begin with, Panama can boast 1518 islands,
many of which are uninhabited; close to 500 rivers, including 2 that offer
some of the best rapids to come on the scene in many years; unparalleled
biodiversity; two mountain ranges; pristine stretches of rain forest; and
much more. Panama has been given the highest tourist safety rating by the
Pinkerton Intelligence Agency–the same rating given to the United States.
Ninety-five percent of the tap water is drinkable. But best of all: almost
no one knows about it.
